Grand Kru Election Controversy: NEC-LINU Tussel over Recount VS Rerun, As Intimidation Report Emerge

IPNews-Grand Kru County: What looks like an undecided moment for leading candidate Nathaniel N. Bahway, win in Grand Kru county may just be on the horizon, if suspicion of bollot stuffings is anything to go by.

Reports gathered by IPNews says there are intension tussle between the National Elections Commission-NEC, and officials of the Liberia National Union-LINU, over whether or not votes should be recounted or a rerun conducted in district No. 2, Buluwin Town.

Accroding to the report, officials of the Opposition, including Independent Candidates in Grand Kru are contesting that recount cannot take place due to the breaking of the seal of the bollot box and suspicion of bollot stuffing.

Voting are expected to take place in three precincts namely: BOLUWIN TOWN, precinct No. 18029, BELOKEN TOWN HALL No. 18050 and WARKPO PULIC SCHOOL precinct No. 18024.

Sources who informed IPNews stated that NEC’s chairperson Cllr. Davidetta Lansahan has vehemently rejected calls from LINU Political leader Nathaniel T. Blama, for a rerun, sighting legal provisions governing elections.

Cllr. Lansahana according to an inside source insisted that issues of rerun could only be possible when NEC’s Grand Kru county , Election Magistrate recommends it.

However, LINU Political leader Nathaniel T. Blama has rejected the NEC’s assertion and vowed to seek the Supreme Court opinion on the matter.

Currently Mr. Nathaniel N. Bahway -LINU, leads with 22.22% .

This week, angry protesters have besieged the office of the National Elections Commission in Barclayville City, calling for the unconditional release of actual results from votes counted during the December 8, 2020, midterm Senatorial elections.

According to the report, the protest broke up after word circulated early this morning that the ruling party was contemplating reversing the votes in favor of Dr. Peter Coleman.

Our reporter in Barclayville explains that members of the Opposition block , including independent candidates have join forces in calling for the unconditional release of the results.

Video potage from the scene is alarming, with just four officers of the Liberia National Police present.

Blama stated that LINU will resist any attempt by the CDC to reverse votes in favor of its candidate even at the level of the Supreme Court of Liberia.

Blama insisted that there is no need to undercut the results of the elections.

Our reporter at the NEC office in Barclay says the situation has intensified with protesters threatening to burn-down building if the results are wreck in favor of Senator Peter Coleman of the CDC.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Liberia National Union-LINU, has alarmed over vicious intimidation of some of its partisans in Grand Kru County, by officers of the Liberian National Police-LNP,

According to LINU political leader Blama, two of its members, including its Grand Kru County, Chairman, Samson Collins, chairman , and James Wheler, Party Representative, were arrested, intimidated and are now behind bars even after frantic efforts by Public defenders to seek their release from further detention.

The pairs are accused of inciting violence which narrowly left the Barclayville City Hall burned, with windshield of a NEC vehicle smashed.

In a related development, Nimba County Senatorial Candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh has accused the National Elections Commission of manipulating elections results to favor of her political rival, Rep. Jeremiah Koung.

In her allegation, Gongloe-Weh, who contested as a candidate for the Collaborating Political Parties, explained that the vote tallying process has so far been conducted in a fraudulent manner to deprive her from winning the contest.

According to her, the current NEC results that place her rival ahead of her are unacceptable and unbelievable because she won districts, especially populated ones.

“It is sad that they are trying to overturn the election results. There is no way that the votes from Districts 4 and 5 can overturn my victory, when I have already won the Lower Nimba belt, which comprises of districts 6, 7, 8 and 9 and also two districts in the Upper Nimba belt,” Edith added.
