LEC Gets Tough-Threatens To Prosecute Perpetrators Of Power Theft

IPNews-Monrovia-Liberia-13 January 2019: The Liberia Electricity Corporation has implored new measures amid at fast tracking prosecution of power theft perpetrators.

The LEC decision to prosecute perpetrators of power theft comes as a result of losses experienced amounting to loss of needed government revenue.

According to LEC legal counsel Bobby Livingstone, there have been too much shortage due to power theft causing the loss of approximately sixty percent worth in power shortage.

The LEC lawyer stated that in recent days LEC security has apprehended two persons who were involved in power theft and collecting at least forty United States dollars from community dwellers.

β€œWe have caught two individuals, David Lee a resident of Center Street and one Layee Kamara resident of New Georgia Estate, who are notorious power theft criminals and we have forwarded them for full prosecution in keeping with law .” Cllr. Livingstone sated.

Counselor Livingstone warned that, those who are in the constant habit of stealing from LEC will face maximum punishment.

Speaking to reporters at his Benson Street Office, the LEC legal counsel added that suspect David Lee a Nigerian National and Layee Kamara were arrested and charged with multiple charges ranging from Theft of Property, Economic Sabotage/Fraud on the Internal Revenue of Liberia, Criminal Conspiracy and Criminal Trespass respectively.

He further explained that, perpetrators of power theft should be brought to justice.

It may be recalled that, LEC over the time has lost over 350,000 worth in power shortage.

β€œThere had been a case of one David Lee who was caught in power theft during the ending of 2018, giving out current for forty united state dollars from more than five hundred community dwellers while Layee Kamara was caught on a light pole in a daytime, he was seen with a climbing shoes andΒ Tools in the early December carrying on some connections.

Counselor Livingston is calling on those who are involved in stealing from LEC should stop because if caught that person will be brought to justice.
