SUP Protesters Gather Before US Embassy to Present Petition -Want Pres. Weah ‘Fix-The-County’

IPNEWS-Monrovia: Students of the campus-based Students Unification Party (SUP) of the government-owned University of Liberia (UL) have gathered at premises of the United States Embassy near Monrovia, on Benson Street to present another position statement, as was done on July 26, 2022, calling on President George Weah’s government to ‘Fix-The-County’.

The SUP protesters are chanting slogans – ‘Fix-The-County Mr. Weah’, ‘Liberians Deserve Better’, The Economic Situation is Terrible’ among many others.

Seen in jubilant mood, the SUP protesters are dancing and singing, but without any incident of disturbances so far as the Liberia National Police have barricaded the Snapper Hill, Benson Street belt, as motorists are prevented from using that route, but only pedestrians are allowed to use that end.

One police officer told IPNEWS, the barricades are only a preventative move to avoid chaos if any other counter-protesters would want to make their way to the US Embassy. Though the LNP did not confirm whether it had any tip-off of a counter protest, but says it is only carrying out its constitutional mandate to protect lives and properties, that is why it has deployed preventative measures to guide the protesters.

It can be recalled on July 26, 2022, while students of SUP had gathered at the US Embassy to present a position statement to the US government on the current economic crisis that has hit Liberia, a counter-protest group under the banner of Coalition for Democratic Change – Council of Patriots (COP-CDC) disrupted the SUP protest, leaving scores of SUP members to sustain injuries, the worst being that of Christopher Walter Sisulu Sivili, who was reported to be in a critical condition.

After days of public outcries and condemnation, President Weah had to order the Ministry of Justice to arrest all those who caused the July 26, 2022 violence in front of the premises of the US Embassy, and in the end, seven members of the CDC-COP were arrested and charged to court. The legal battle is still ongoing.

Now that a new protest is being staged today, August 24, 2022, there has been no sign of any violence but IPNEWS will keep the public informed as things unfold during the second SUP protest that is asking President Weah to ‘Fix-The-Country’ and make Liberians lead a better life.
